Il maestoso dipinto, diviso in tre pannelli sovrapposti, originariamente era appeso sopra il sepolcro marmoreo che Ulrich von Liechtenstein, principe vescovo di Trento, aveva commissionato per se stesso nella cattedrale nel 1504, un anno prima della sua morte. L'opera, precedentemente attribuita a Dürer e a Giacomo da Vicenza, fu poi attribuita ad un anonimo artista, probabilmente del Nord, che fu influenzato dalla pittura rinascimentale italiana del Veneto.
