El artista, nacido cerca de Frankfurt y entrenado en Roma, se trasladó a Inglaterra en 1760. Patronizado por George III y la Reina Charlotte, en 1768 fue nominado por el rey a la nueva Academia Real. Esta pequeña y pintada longitud entera de un hombre con vestido clerical es la primera obra de Zoffany para entrar en la colección del Museo.
