Dated 1718, questo ritratto rappresenta un personaggio che abbiamo relativamente poco informazioni su: Nikolas (Niklas) Buck, un nativo di Schwaben era un residente di Vienna, tra il 1718 e il 1720. Dal momento che non abbiamo alcuna registrazione di un dipinto, fatto da un pittore di nome Buck, la spiegazione probabile è che il giovane era un avventuriero di successo alla corte viennese, che ha scelto di posare portando gli attributi della pittura. La pergamena, sotto la mano sinistra del presunto pittore, porta un'iscrizione, con un messaggio che pretende di gettare una luce sulle circostanze, in cui il ritratto è stato fatto: "Ich habe childrent gezeigt Floreten wohl zu führen Und in die Chirurgie mich auch versiert gemacht Nun mehro mit der Zeit kann mich das Mahlen Nicol. Buck aus Schwaben 1718.”(
