Fechada 1718, este retrato representa un personaje que tenemos comparativamente poca información sobre: Nikolas (Niklas) Buck, nativo de Schwaben era residente de Viena, entre 1718 y 1720. Ya que no tenemos registro de una pintura, hecha por un pintor llamado Buck, la explicación probable es que el joven era un aventurero exitoso en la corte vienesa, que decidió posar llevando los atributos de la pintura. El pergamino, bajo la mano izquierda del pintor, lleva una inscripción, con un mensaje que pretende arrojar algo de luz sobre las circunstancias, bajo las cuales se hizo el retrato: "Ich habe sonst gezeigt Floreten wohl zu führen Und in die Chirurgie mich auch versiert gemacht Nun mehro mitbra cerebro kann mich das Nicol. Buck aus Schwaben 1718.
