De nombreux changeurs d'argent travaillaient à la Judengasse de Francfort. Comme la valeur des pièces était basée sur le poids du métal, les balances étaient les changeurs d'argent le plus important instrument. Comme les Juifs travaillaient souvent dans des professions qui traitaient des transactions financières, ils connaissaient généralement très bien les différents types d'argent en circulation. Pour une taxe, ils pèseraient les pièces étrangères et les convertiraient en monnaie requise.
