Molti cambiavalute hanno lavorato nella Judengasse Frankfurt. Poiché il valore delle monete era basato sul peso del metallo, le scale erano lo strumento più importante dei cambiavalute. Poiché gli ebrei spesso lavoravano in professioni che trattavano di transazioni monetarie, erano generalmente molto familiari con i vari tipi di denaro in circolazione. Per una tassa avrebbero pesare le monete straniere e convertirle nella valuta richiesta.
