Der 1716 in Kopenhagen geborene Johann Georg Ziesenis war seit 1760 Hofmaler in Hannover. Er hatte die einzigartige Möglichkeit, im Auftrag der Herzogin Philippine Charlotte von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel zwischen dem 17. und 20. Juni 1763 in Schloss Salzdahlum eine Porträtskizze von Friedrich dem Großen anzufertigen. Sie gilt als die einzige, für die der König zu seinen Regierungszeiten gesessen hat. Die Ölskizze war die Grundlage für weitere Porträts, die Ziesenis schuf, so das Kniestück, das Friedrich zwar mit Feldherrenstab, aber im zivilen Rock zeigt. (Jürgen Luh)
