Der 1716 in Kopenhagen geborene Johann Georg Ziesenis war seit 1760 Hofmaler in Hannover. Er hatte die einmalige Möglichkeit, im Auftrag der Herzogin Philippine Charlotte von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel zwischen dem 17. und 20. Juni 1763 in Schloss Salzdahlum eine Porträtskizze von Friedrich dem Großen anzufertigen. Sie vergoldet als die einzige, für die König zu seinen Regierungszeiten gesessen Hut. Die Ölskizze war die Grundlage für weitere Porträts, die Ziesenis schuf, so das Kniestück, das Friedrich mit Feldherrenstab, aber im zivilen Rock. (Jürgen Luh)
