La medaglia mostra Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) in profilo distintivo, essendo stato modellato nel 1816 a Weimar secondo i desideri del poeta dello scultore di Berlino Johann Gottfried Schadow. L'occasione è stata il 66 ° compleanno dello scrittore e consigliere privy. Il profilo antiquato del ritratto sulla parte anteriore riflette lo stile neoclassico rappresentato dall’amico di Schadow Antonio Canova; Pegasus, il cavallo delle muse, arretrato da una scogliera sul retro, è stato citato da una famosa medaglia rinascimentale – la medaglia Bembo, per essere più precisa – che Goethe possedeva all’epoca. Questo accenno non sarà coincidente, e molto probabilmente anche deriva da questo principe di poeti, dal momento che l'umanista cardinale Pietro Bembo (1470–1547) è stato anche uno scrittore riconosciuto, patrono delle arti e politico. La scelta del motivo può anche alludere alla traduzione di Goethe dell’autobiografia di Benvenuto Cellini, dal momento che nel giorno di Goethe, la Medaglia Bembo era ancora pensata come opera dello scultore e orafo italiano. Questa medaglia, molto apprezzata da Goethe, è stata lanciata in bronzo, rame, piombo e ferro.
