Nato a Zurigo e addestrato ad essere predicatore, Fuseli (originario Füssli), uomo di estrema erudizione, fu una delle figure più influenti del mondo dell'arte cosmopolita del 1800. Gli otto anni trascorsi a Roma (1770 – 1778) furono decisivi nel suo divenire artista. Nel 1780 si stabilì a Londra, dove era ugualmente a casa nei circoli letterari e artistici.
