I figli del banchiere di Amburgo Martin Anton Hecksher esaminano un piano della scuola Schnepfenthal, fondata a Gotha nel 1787 e considerato uno dei più progressisti in Germania. Tischbein era al centro della ricca cultura intellettuale del romanticismo tedesco, e raffigura i giovani studenti in un ambiente naturale che era simpatico per illuminare le riforme educative che hanno spazzato l'Europa e ha incoraggiato una nuova visione dell'infanzia. Disceso da una famiglia ebrea ashkenazista di primo piano, sotto la pressione di un diffuso antisemitismo che influenza le attività e la vita sociale, il loro padre supervisionò la conversione dei ragazzi al protestantesimo nel 1808 prima della sua conversione nel 1815.
