El arte alemán a finales del siglo XVI y XVII fue influenciado significativamente por las tendencias de Italia. Entre los representantes más destacados de este fenómeno en el Kunsthalle Karlsruhe se encuentran Johann König (1586-1642), Johann Liss (1597-1629/30) y Johann Heinrich Schönfeld (1609-1682/83). Todos ellos viajaron y trabajaron en Italia, donde recibieron estimulación vital para su trabajo. Johann König, nacido en Nuremberg, estuvo en Roma desde 1610 hasta 1613.
