Sul bordo settentrionale della Borgogna, ma in realtà in Champagne, sorgeva la città medievale di Troyes, dove lavorava Jacques de L'Estin. Dopo la pittura, probabilmente a Roma, il suo autoritratto, ora nel Musée des Beaux-Arts di Troyes, la sua arte continuò in una vena molto più leggera, con un sacco di colore chiaro e composizione swirling. De L'Estin è un raro esempio di un pittore che lavora nelle province che si è tenuto aggiornato senza degenerare in ingenuità provinciale, e alcune delle sue immagini sono state confuse con l'opera di artisti di gran lunga più grandi. Gli autoritratti sono rari per la maggior parte degli artisti francesi del XVII secolo. Questo mostra l'influenza di Simon Vouet.
