Johann Moritz Rugendas (Augsburg, Germania, 1802 - Weilheim, Germania, 1858) è stato un pittore, disegnatore e incisore. Noleggiato come bozzetto di spedizione e documentarista per la spedizione brasiliana del Barone de Langsdorff, arrivò in Brasile nel 1822 e prese parte alla spedizione solo nel 1824. Tra il 1825 e il 1828, visse a Parigi, Augsburg e Monaco, dedicandosi all’organizzazione e alla pubblicazione del suo lavoro “Voyage Pittoresque au Brésil ” (Viagem Pitoresca ao Brasil), in una sofisticata edizione litografia di Engelmann, con testo in francese e tedesco, nel 1835. Questo libro di viaggio, rivolto al grande pubblico, ha avuto la partecipazione di 22 litografi e Victor Aimé Huberna per la preparazione dei testi.
