Quando i problemi con la sua cattiva udienza sono peggiorati, Ludwig van Beethoven ha cercato di trovare un aiuto, che renderebbe più facile la comunicazione con gli altri. Così contattò il noto meccanico e inventore Johann Nepomuk Mälzel (1772-1838), che visse a Vienna dal 1792, e che era stato in stretto contatto con Beethoven intorno al 1812/1813. Mälzel ha sviluppato una serie di trombe auricolari a forma diversa per il compositore, che in parte dovevano essere attaccate alla testa con un cerchio metallico. (Quattro di questi apparecchi acustici possono essere visti nel Beethoven-Haus di Bonn, un altro è in possesso della società di amanti della musica a Vienna.)
