Esta pintura fue llamada El Artista en Su Estudio, y en efecto podemos suponer que el artista visto desde atrás era él mismo. Sin embargo, la intención de representar una alegoría es más fuerte aquí que en todas las obras de Vermeer. La cortina pesada de la izquierda, que permite al espectador tomar la escena, ha decididomente connotaciones teatrales. Así también la joven que el artista retrata, y cuya corona de laurel la identifica fácilmente como Fama. También existe una conexión con Clio, la musa de la historia. Tiene una trompeta y un libro de Thucydides.
