Questo è il più famoso paesaggio urbano dell'età d'oro olandese. L'interazione tra luce e ombra, l'impressionante cielo nuvoloso e le sottili riflessioni in acqua rendono questo dipinto un capolavoro assoluto. Stiamo guardando Delft dal sud. C'è poco vento e la città ha un'aria di tranquillità. Vermeer riflette questa tranquillità nella sua composizione, facendo tre strisce orizzontali: acqua, città e cielo. Dipinse anche gli edifici un po' più nefasti di loro.
