Qui Vermeer ha scelto un punto di osservazione insolito. Dalle profondità di uno spazio ombreggiato, ci viene dato uno sguardo di una stanza. Una donna riccamente rivestita ha momentaneamente cessato la sua musica per una lettera che le è appena stata consegnata. Sembra inaspettatamente alla serva. Il soggetto della lettera potrebbe essere legato al paesaggio marino dietro le due donne. Nel XVII secolo il mare era spesso paragonato all'amore, e l'amante a una nave. Dalla collezione di P. e J.F. van Lennep (Amsterdam), tra gli altri. Acquistato nel 1893, con il supporto del Vereniging Rembrandt.
