In quello che può essere una delle prime opere del suo stile maturo, Vermeer trasforma il tema di una ragazza che intrattene il suo pretendente, già popolare nell'arte olandese, in uno studio abbagliante di spazio pieno di luce. La lamina scura della silhouette dell'ufficiale drammatizza sia l'illusione della profondità che il brillante gioco della luce sulla donna e l'arredamento della camera. La mappa dell'Olanda sulla parete estrema, orientata ad ovest in alto, fu pubblicata per la prima volta nel 1621. Sia la mappa che le sedie appaiono in altri dipinti di Vermeer.
