Benjamin Watkins Leigh (1781-1849) est né dans le comté de Chesterfield, en Virginie, fils du révérend William Leigh (1787) et d'Elizabeth Watkins (1799). Il fréquente le collège de William et de Marie, étudie le droit et commence à pratiquer à Petersbourg en 1802. Après la mort de ses deux parents, il a agi comme tuteur pour son frère cadet William. Leigh se marie trois fois : le 24 décembre 1802, à sa cousine Mary Selden Watkins; le 30 novembre 1813, à Susan Colston; le 24 novembre 1821, à Julia Wickham (1801-1883), la fille aînée de John Wickham. Leur fils Benjamin Watkins Leigh, Jr., (1831-1863) est mort à la bataille de Gettysburg pendant la guerre civile américaine.
