Selon la Bible de la famille, l'immigrant écossais John Murchie (1750-1831) de Manchester, Virginie, a épousé Catherine Harrison, une fille de William Harrison de Virginie, en 1782. Ce portrait d'huile et son compagnon de John (actuellement en vue dans This Is Richmond, VA) sont attribués à l'artiste John Durand. Tradition anglaise, les portraits de mariage ont été commandés par la classe de genterie coloniale non seulement comme symbole de statut, mais aussi pour illustrer les liens familiaux. Jean et Catherine produisirent cinq enfants à partir de la naissance de Marthe en 1783. En 1791, Catherine meurt après la naissance de sa plus jeune fille Catherine (morte en 1792). John Murchie s'est remarié au temple Susanna en 1804.
