Secondo la Bibbia di famiglia, l'immigrato scozzese John Murchie (1750-1831) di Manchester, Virginia, sposò Catherine Harrison, figlia di William Harrison della Virginia, nel 1782. Questo ritratto di olio e il suo compagno di John (attualmente in vista in This Is Richmond, VA) sono attribuiti all'artista John Durand. Una tradizione inglese, i ritratti di nozze sono stati commissionati dalla classe gentry coloniale non solo come simbolo di stato, ma anche per illustrare le connessioni familiari. Giovanni e Caterina produssero cinque figli a partire dalla nascita di Marta nel 1783. Nel 1791, Caterina morì dopo la nascita della figlia più giovane Caterina (d. 1792). John Murchie si risposò al Tempio di Susanna nel 1804.
