Come molte opere di Peto, questa tela porta la falsa firma del suo noto contemporaneo William Michael Harnett. Nel 1886 Harnett aveva dipinto un trompe-l'oeil di successo ("deceive the eye") immagine chiamata "The Old Violin" (National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.), che è stato riprodotto in un cromolitografo l'anno successivo. Peto potrebbe aver conosciuto l'originale o la stampa. Anche se ha preso in prestito la composizione di Harnett, ha fatto qualcosa di molto diverso di esso. Adulando forme e ignorando la modellazione, creò un modello decorativo con un effetto testuale che è evocativo piuttosto che puramente illusionistico.
