Als La Farge während der 1860er Jahre Blumen in Öl gemalt hatte, zog er vor, ihre Essenz zu erfassen, anstatt die wissenschaftliche Genauigkeit zu verfolgen. Die prächtigen floralen Aquarelle, die er in den 1880er Jahren gemalt, erinnern an seine früheren Öle, aber ihre reiche Farbe spricht seine Meisterschaft des Aquarellmediums und ihre dekorative Vitalität spiegelt seine Experimente in Glasmalerei wider. Ein scharfer Kritiker bemerkte: "Seine Blumen haben keine botanische Wahrheit, sondern brennen mit Liebe und Schönheit."
