Jeremiah Platt (1744–1811) war ein erfolgreicher New Yorker Geschäftsmann, ein Partner mit seinem Schwager Samuel Broome in der Mercktil-Firma von Broome, Platt und Company. Mare, ein wenig bekannter, aber hochqualifizierter New Yorker Porträtist, malte ein erfinderisches und raffiniertes Porträt von Platt, mit so viel Aufmerksamkeit auf den Chippendale-Stil Seitenstuhl wie auf den Sitz.
