Sir Joshua Reynolds war bekannt für seine außergewöhnlichen Porträts von Kindern, oft gelobt, ihren Geist der Komödie, Sympathie, Unschuld und Zärtlichkeit zu erfassen. Dieses Porträt von John Crewe wird nach einem Gemälde des britischen Henry VIII von Hans Holbein the Younger (1497–1543) modelliert.
