En 1767 Juan Runciman y su hermano Alejandro viajaron a Roma. Allí se unieron a un grupo internacional de artistas asociados con Henri Fuseli (1741-1825). Muchos de los artistas de este círculo estaban interesados en temas dramáticos y fantásticos que les permitieron una nueva libertad en su trabajo. Los temas se derivaron de la poesía, la literatura, y en particular las obras teatrales de Shakespeare. Juan era un draughtsman consumado y etcher, y en Roma su trabajo se convirtió en más vibrante y expresivo en estilo. En este boceto de ejecución rápida, el lavado marrón en el papel se destaca con gouache ligero, dando a las figuras una apariencia extraña y sobrenatural. Anteriormente catalogado como ‘Tres Satyrs’, ahora se cree que son las tres brujas del Macbeth de Shakespeare.
