L'ispirazione per questa foto venne durante una spedizione in barca Sargent prese il Tamigi a Pangbourne nel settembre 1885, con l'artista statunitense Edwin Austin Abbey, durante la quale vide lanterne cinesi appese tra alberi e gigli. Iniziò la foto soggiornando nella casa del pittore F.D. Millet a Broadway, Worcestershire, poco dopo la sua mossa in Gran Bretagna da Parigi. All'inizio ha usato la figlia di cinque anni di Millets Katharine come suo modello, ma è stata presto sostituita da Polly e Dorothy (Dolly) Barnard, le figlie dell'illustratore Frederick Barnard, perché avevano l'esatto haircolor Sargent stava cercando. Dolly, all'età di undici anni, è a sinistra; Polly, all'età di sette anni, è a destra.
