Gulian Verplanck (1751–1799) se graduó de Kings’s College (ahora Universidad de Columbia) en 1768 y luego pasó varios años en Holanda trabajando en la firma bancaria de su tío materno, Daniel Crommelin. En 1788, tras su regreso a Nueva York, Gulian fue elegido para la asamblea estatal, donde sirvió dos veces como orador. También se convirtió en presidente del Banco de Nueva York y, en 1792, ayudó a fundar la Asociación Tontine, un precursor de la Bolsa de Valores de Nueva York. Afrutado también en su vida privada, Gulian Verplanck tenía siete hijos.
