Gulian Verplanck (1751–1799) si laureò al Kings’s College (oggi Columbia University) nel 1768 e trascorse diversi anni nei Paesi Bassi lavorando presso lo studio bancario dello zio materno, Daniel Crommelin. Nel 1788, dopo il suo ritorno a New York, Gulian fu eletto all'assemblea statale, dove servì due volte come oratore. Divenne anche presidente della Banca di New York e, nel 1792, contribuì a fondare la Tontine Association, precursore della Borsa di New York. Fruttato anche nella sua vita privata, Gulian Verplanck aveva sette figli.
