Il soggetto di questo ritratto incredibilmente vitale era un ricco mercante di Boston. Ha scelto di essere dipinto indossando un banyan sciolto ma elegante, o abito da salotto - una moda gentiluomo popolare al momento - e un turbante invece di una parrucca formale. Il più sorprendente del ritratto è il suo senso convincente della realtà, che Copley ha raggiunto attraverso vari mezzi. Dipinse meticolosamente ogni piega di stoffa e un po' di pattern nell'abito damasco di Sherburne, così come ogni ruga carnosa sul viso e sulle mani.
