Le sujet de ce portrait étonnamment vital était un riche marchand de Boston. Il a choisi d'être peint avec un banyan lâche mais élégant, ou robe de salon – une mode populaire de gentleman à l'époque – et un turban au lieu d'une perruque formelle. Le plus frappant du portrait est son sens convaincant de la réalité, que Copley a réalisé par différents moyens. Il peint méticuleusement chaque pli de tissu et un peu de motif en robe de damas Sherburne, ainsi que chaque ride charnue sur son visage et ses mains. De même, en éclairant fortement l'image de la gauche, Copley créa une figure tangiblement solide.
