Richard Dana (1700–1772) war eine Gerechtigkeit der Provinz Massachusetts und eine führende Figur der Boston Bar. Während der frühen Etappen der Revolution hängte die Stadt von seinem weisen Rechtsberatung ab. Er war Mitglied des Komitees, das den Boston Massacre im Jahre 1770 untersuchte, etwa zur gleichen Zeit hatte er für Copley. Als mutige Erweiterung des mächtigen Porträts wählte Copley einen geschnitzten und geschwungenen Rococo-Rahmen. Der Rahmen wird mit dem Wappen der Dana-Familie personalisiert: drei Hirsche, die von einem Chevron getrennt sind, mit einem Fuchs am Kamm und Cavendo tutus ("By caution secure") als Motto.
