Vanderlyn, ein New Yorker Eingeborener, hat diesen meisterhaften Selbstporträt in Paris ausgeführt, wo er vier Jahre gelebt hatte; er war der erste amerikanische Maler, der in Frankreich studierte. Die Arbeit demonstriert den Einfluss von Vanderlyns Lehrer, François-André Vincent, sowie des neoklassizistischen Meisters Jacques-Louis David, der die Leinwand im Salon von 1800 laudierte. Der Künstler präsentierte sein Porträt seinem Freund und Patron, dem amerikanischen Politiker Aaron Burr. Vanderlyns Faszination mit Frankreich würde später zu der spektakulären "Panoramic View of the Palace and Gardens of Versailles" (1818–19; 52.184), auch im American Wing (Galerie 735).
