Vanderlyn, un nativo di New York, eseguì questo magistrale autoritratto a Parigi, dove aveva vissuto per quattro anni; fu il primo pittore statunitense a studiare in Francia. L'opera dimostra l'influenza dell'insegnante di Vanderlyn, François-André Vincent, così come quella del maestro neoclassico Jacques-Louis David, che ha lodato la tela al Salone del 1800. L'artista ha presentato il ritratto al suo amico e patrono, il politico americano Aaron Burr. Il fascino di Vanderlyn con la Francia si tradurrà poi nella spettacolare "Vista Panoramica del Palazzo e dei Giardini di Versailles" (1818-19; 52.184), anche in vista dell'ala americana (gallery 735).
