Vanderlyn, nativo de Nueva York, ejecutó este magistral autorretrato en París, donde había vivido durante cuatro años; fue el primer pintor americano en estudiar en Francia. La obra demuestra la influencia del maestro de Vanderlyn, François-André Vincent, así como del maestro neoclásico Jacques-Louis David, quien elogió el lienzo en el Salón de 1800. El artista presentó el retrato a su amigo y patrón, el político estadounidense Aaron Burr. La fascinación de Vanderlyn con Francia resultaría más tarde en la espectacular "Panoramic View of the Palace and Gardens of Versailles" (1818-19; 52.184), también en vista del Ala Americana (gallery 735).
