Joseph Marx (1772-1840) a immigré en Amérique de Hanovre, en Allemagne, dans les années 1790 avec sa mère veuve, Frances (1750-1819). À New York, Marx épousa Richea Myers (1769-1838), fille de l'orfèvre célèbre Myer Myers. La famille Marx s'installe à Richmond, en Virginie, et réside dans les rues 6 et Cary. Ils produisirent dix enfants survivants entre 1795 et 1812. La famille Marx a appartenu à la congrégation de Beth Shalome et a occupé une place importante dans la communauté juive de Richmond, qui a prospéré depuis le XVIIIe siècle.
