Cleopatra (1888) è un'opera del pittore inglese Pre-Raphaelite John William Waterhouse. Cleopatra VII Thea Philopator (Greco: Dea che ama il suo Padre) b. 69 BC, d. Aug. 30, 30 BC, Alessandria, Egitto. Regina egiziana famosa nella storia e nel dramma, amante di Giulio Cesare e poi la moglie di Marco Antonio. Divenne regina alla morte del padre, Tolomeo XII, nel 51 a.C., governando successivamente con i suoi due fratelli Tolomeo XIII (51-47) e Tolomeo XIV (47-44) e suo figlio Tolomeo XV Cesare (44-30). Dopo che gli eserciti romani di Ottaviano (il futuro imperatore Augusto) sconfissero le loro forze combinate, Antonio e Cleopatra si suicidarono, e l'Egitto cadde sotto la dominazione romana. La sua ambizione non meno del suo fascino ha influenzato attivamente la politica romana in un periodo cruciale, e lei è venuta a rappresentare, come ha fatto nessun'altra donna di antichità, il prototipo del femme fatale romantico.
