L’arrivo di Wollaston a New York da Londra nel 1749 introdusse alle colonie un nuovo stile di ritrattistica caratterizzato da tessuti ricchi e dai colori vivaci e pose decisamente informali. Il famoso commerciante indiano William Axtell (1720–1795) ordinò questo ritratto per le sue due case di New York: il luogo di campagna chiamato Melrose Hall a Flatbush, Long Island (oggi Brooklyn). Durante la guerra rivoluzionaria, Axtell fu commissionato dagli inglesi come colonnello per i corpi di Long Island Loyalists. Le sue partecipazioni americane furono confiscate nel 1784, dopo la sua fuga a New York per l'Inghilterra.
