Wollastons Ankunft in New York von London im Jahre 1749 stellte den Kolonien einen neuen Stil der Porträts vor, der sich durch reiche, hell gefärbte Stoffe und sprightly, informelle Posen auszeichnet. Der prominente westindische Kaufmann William Axtell (1720–1795) bestellte dieses Porträt für die Größe seiner beiden New Yorker Häuser: der Landplatz namens Melrose Hall in Flatbush, Long Island (jetzt Brooklyn). Während des Revolutionären Krieges wurde Axtell von den Briten als Colonel für die Leichen von Long Island Loyalists in Auftrag gegeben. Seine amerikanischen Betriebe wurden 1784 beschlagnahmt, nachdem er New York für England geflüchtet hatte.
