Si presume che John Wollaston fosse il figlio del noto ritrattista londinese John Wollaston. Era probabilmente addestrato da suo padre, anche se è stato suggerito che ha ricevuto istruzioni da Joseph van Acken, un pittore drappeggio di grande successo che ha completato il costume e il dettaglio di sfondo in ritratti da artisti britannici Rococo, Allan Ramsay e Thomas Hudson. Formato nella tradizione rococò inglese, Wollaston arrivò in America nel 1749. Per quasi vent'anni, viaggiò lungo la costa atlantica introducendo questo stile sofisticato. I suoi abili rendimenti in costume e il ritratto aggraziato pose esercitarono una notevole influenza sui giovani pittori americani. Nel settembre 1765, Wollaston era arrivato a Charleston. Nonostante il suo evidente talento, Wollaston non fu in grado di rompere il monopolio del patronato che l'artista Charleston Jeremiah Theus godì e nel 1767 salpò per l'Inghilterra.
