Questo pezzo di conversazione — un ritratto di gruppo con elementi narrativi — è stato il primo lavoro commissionato di un tipo che Johnson avrebbe spesso dipingere. Mostra William Tilden Blodgett (1823–1875), sostenitore della causa dell'Unione e fiducioso fondatore del Metropolitan Museum, con la sua famiglia nel rinascimento Revival salotto della loro casa al 27 West 25th Street. Descritto durante la guerra civile, in un momento di sconvolgimento urbano, l'interno sereno decorato per Natale, incarna "il miglior sentimento di casa", come ha osservato un critico nel 1865. Solo il giocattolo di un ballerino maschile nero caricature tenuto dal giovane ragazzo accenna a questioni pressanti di lotta razziale e di emancipazione.
