José Campeche (1754 – 1809) ist zweifellos einer der bedeutendsten lateinamerikanischen Maler des 18. Jahrhunderts. Unter seinen bekanntesten Arbeiten ist dieses Doppelporträt der Töchter von Ramón de Castro, spanischer Gouverneur von Puerto Rico, der die Verteidigung der Insel gegen den englischen Angriff im Jahre 1797 überwies. In dieser Malerei verbindet Campeche meist Elemente aus spanischen und creole Einflüssen.
