José Campeche (1754 – 1809) è indiscutibilmente uno dei più importanti pittori latinoamericani del XVIII secolo. Tra le sue opere più conosciute c'è questo doppio ritratto delle figlie di Ramón de Castro, governatore spagnolo di Porto Rico che supervisionò la difesa dell'isola contro l'attacco inglese nel 1797. In questo dipinto, Campeche fonde con maestria elementi da influenze spagnole e creole.
