Der klassisch ausgebildete Maler Joseph Anton Koch war eine Vaterfigur für viele deutschsprachige Künstler, die im frühen 19. Jahrhundert Rom besuchten. Er erneuerte das Genre der heroischen Landschaftsmalerei, die von den Franzosen Claude Lorrain und Nicolas Poussin aus dem 17. Jahrhundert gegründet worden war. Kochs Ruhm ruht auf diesem ikonischen Bild, das er als “griechische Landschaft” bezeichnet. Es ist die vierte und letzte Fassung einer Komposition, die er 1805 (Staatliche Kunsthalle, Karlsruhe) gemalt hat.
