Il pittore di formazione classica Joseph Anton Koch è stato una figura paterna di molti artisti di lingua tedesca che hanno visitato Roma all'inizio del XIX secolo. Rinnovò il genere di eroica pittura paesaggistica, che era stata fondata dai maestri francesi del XVII secolo Claude Lorrain e Nicolas Poussin. La fama di Koch poggia su questa immagine iconica, che ha indicato come un “paesaggio greco”. È la quarta e ultima versione di una composizione dipinta per la prima volta nel 1805 (Staatliche Kunsthalle, Karlsruhe).
