Hidley arbeitete in Poestenkill, New York, als Hausmaler, Handyman, Künstler und diente als Sexton der Evangelischen Lutherischen Kirche. Er hat eine Reihe von Stadtlandschaften von Poestenkill und den umliegenden Dörfern gemalt, einen Luftblick angelegt und klar definierte, erkennbare Gebäude in seinen Kompositionen eingearbeitet. Hier ist die erwähnte Kirche, neben der Hidley lebte, die prominenteste Struktur. Poesten Kill – "kill", von den Holländern, bedeutet "creek" – kann sowohl im linken Vordergrund gesehen werden, wo es unter einer Brücke geht, und in der Ferne, wo es über einen Damm spillt. Die Stadt war ein wichtiges lumbering Zentrum, und viele Mühlen waren entlang des Baches.
