Esta imagen es un producto del viaje de Turner al oeste de Inglaterra en el verano de 1811. Saltash es una antigua ciudad de mercado en Cornwall, a través del río Tamar desde Devonport y Plymouth, y es el sitio de un servicio de ferry centenario. Turner evocó el comercio en Saltash a través de los barcos, los caballitos y la gente se reunió a lo largo de la orilla barrosa. El principal crítico de arte británico John Ruskin describió la pintura en una carta de 1852 como "lo que la mente ve cuando busca poesía en la vida real humilde". Aunque el cielo está dañado, la mitad inferior de la pintura está bien conservada.
