Dieses Bild ist ein Produkt von Turner's Reise nach Westen von England im Sommer 1811. Saltash ist eine alte Marktstadt in Cornwall, über den Tamar River von Devonport und Plymouth, und ist der Standort eines jahrhundertealten Fährdienstes. Turner evozierte den Handel an Saltash durch die Boote, Packpferde und die Menschen versammelten sich entlang der Schlammküste. Der führende britische Kunstkritiker John Ruskin beschrieb das Gemälde in einem Brief von 1852 als "was der Geist sieht, wenn es um Poesie im demütigen tatsächlichen Leben sucht." Obwohl der Himmel beschädigt ist, ist die untere Hälfte des Gemäldes gut erhalten.
