Questa immagine è un prodotto del viaggio di Turner a ovest dell'Inghilterra nell'estate 1811. Saltash è una vecchia città di mercato in Cornovaglia, attraverso il fiume Tamar da Devonport e Plymouth, ed è il sito di un servizio traghetto secolare. Turner ha evocato il commercio a Saltash attraverso le barche, i cavallucci e le persone assemblate lungo la riva fangosa. Il critico d'arte britannico John Ruskin descrisse il dipinto in una lettera del 1852 come "quello che la mente vede quando cerca poesia nella vita reale umile". Anche se il cielo è danneggiato, la metà inferiore del dipinto è ben conservato.
